Why Sleeping well is REALLY Important to Our Health and Well-Being
We need sleep for the following reasons:
- Increases Immunity
- Researchers have found that, when deprived of sleep for weeks, animals end up with low to no immune function. In humans, this could translate to one being more susceptible to colds and flus at first.
- After long-term sleep deprivation, there are possible consequences such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
- Most of our bodies' restorative functions like tissue repair, muscle growth, protein synthesis, and growth hormones happen mostly during sleep.
- Our brains refuel and repair during deep sleep.
- Better quality and quantity of sleep is associated with a stronger immune system and being able to fight off viruses and bacteria.
- Helps to decrease inflammation and pain.
- Studies have shown that when people are sleep deprived there is often times increased stress put on the body which can lead to inflammatory conditions, such as increased blood pressure, impaired control of blood glucose, and increased inflammation (which can lead to pain and other inflammatory conditions).
- Helps to control weight gain and regulates blood sugar
- During sleep, our bodies secrete hormones that help to control appetite, energy metabolism, and glucose processing. Obtaining too little sleep upsets the balance of these and other hormones. For example, poor sleep leads to an increase in the production of cortisol, often referred to as the "stress hormone."
- Poor sleep may result in food cravings even after we have eaten an adequate number of calories.
- Researchers have found that insufficient sleep may lead to type 2 diabetes by influencing the way the body processes glucose, the high-energy carbohydrate that cells use for fuel.
- Helps us feel happier and more relaxed
- Chronic sleep issues have been correlated with depression, anxiety, and mental distress.
- If you've ever been sleep-deprived you know that your decision-making skills, mood and flexibility are decreased.
- Sleeping increases our mental acuity, focus and mood.
